In the 17th century, the King's Minister Colbert, considering horse-breeding to be a reflection of national wealth, and anxious to increase the quality and quantity of horses in the realm, introduced the “Royal Stud farms”.
Under Napoleon the first was opened in Saint-Lô in 1806: of 23 national Stud farms Saint-Lô remains the most important measured by the number of thoroughbreds raised here, and with the smallest catchment area ( the Manche and the west of the département of Calvados)
In 1912 there were 422 stallions here, stabled in two premises: the ‘new' premises were built in 1879, and the ‘old' were destroyed in 6 June 1944. All through the 19th century and to the present day the stud-farm has made its mark on the countryside and economic life of the region. There are over 80 stallions today, specialising in the Norman Cob and the French Selle.
